We've talked about the value of being present in your life. But when you are overwhelmed, it can be exceptionally difficult to just be present.
Here are 7 tips to help you be more present in your life:
When you're with people - ask questions. If you’re asking questions, you’re more prone to be actively listening.
Observe like you're Sherlock Holmes. You can learn an awful lot by just paying attention more. Act like a detective and start observing beyond the obvious.
Breathe. Stop. Slow down. Breathe. Stress is such a major reasons for us rushing through life. Sometimes you just need to make yourself stop rushing for a second so you can breathe.
Look people in the eye. It's harder to be distracted when you're looking someone in the eye when they're talking. If I let my eyes wander, it seems like my thoughts go with them.
Don’t do more than one thing at a time. The more you bounce from item to item, the more your mind bounces. Focus has value. We can’t truly multi-task well anyway.
Use your transitions. Whenever you're traveling somewhere (to a meeting, home, etc.) be really mindful of what you’re going into. Think about it and consider your role. Think about how you can do your best and be your best while you’re there. I find that it really helps me to be more present in meetings, work and at home when I’ve mentally prepared and prayed about it ahead of time.
Value the present. Recognize that your life is happening right. this. very. moment. The present is your time to love, serve and be in life. You can’t go back to the past and the best thing you can do for the future is to be present right this very moment. Recognize the value of this moment. When you do, it's much easier to be present in it.
